TUMMY TIME

Babies need to stay active, as staying in one position (especially on their back) for long periods can be boring for them. Naturally, babies have their own exercise routines to aid development, such as kicking their legs or wriggling around playfully during a nappy change.

These movements contribute to muscle development, which supports other actions like rolling over, turning their heads, sitting up, and eventually pulling themselves up and walking.

You can encourage your baby’s muscle strength by using ‘Tummy Time’. Simply lay your baby down in a safe and secure area on their tummy, giving them the chance to move their arms and legs. This helps develop their gross motor skills, eventually aiding them in rolling over. Over time, your baby will learn to push up from their tummy and straighten their arms.

Tummy Time also strengthens back, shoulder, and neck muscles, improving general mobility and leading to better head control and movement.

Always ensure your baby is never left unattended during Tummy Time and enjoy watching their development every step of the way.

Here are some tips to make Tummy Time more engaging and enjoyable for your baby:

  1. Use Toys and Mirrors: Place colorful toys or a baby-safe mirror within your baby’s reach. This can encourage them to lift their head and reach out, promoting neck and arm strength.

  2. Get Down on Their Level: Lie down on the floor facing your baby. Your presence and interaction can be very motivating for them.

  3. Sing and Talk: Sing songs, talk to your baby, or make funny faces. The sound of your voice and your expressions can keep them entertained and engaged.

  4. Tummy Time on Your Chest: Lay your baby on your chest while you recline. This can be a comforting way for them to practice lifting their head and using their muscles.

  5. Use a Tummy Time Pillow: A small, firm pillow or a rolled-up towel under their chest can make Tummy Time more comfortable and help them get used to the position.

  6. Short and Frequent Sessions: Start with short sessions of a few minutes and gradually increase the duration as your baby gets more comfortable. Frequent, shorter sessions can be more effective than longer, infrequent ones.

  7. Incorporate Tummy Time into Daily Routine: Make Tummy Time a regular part of your baby’s day, such as after a nap or a diaper change.

  8. Interactive Play Mats: Use play mats with different textures and activities to stimulate your baby’s senses and keep them interested.

  9. Encourage Reaching and Grasping: Place toys just out of reach to encourage your baby to stretch and move towards them.

  10. Stay Positive and Patient: Always be encouraging and patient. Celebrate small milestones and make Tummy Time a fun and positive experience.

Remember, every baby is different, so it’s important to find what works best for your little one. Enjoy these precious moments of growth and development! 😊
